چکیده

PURPOSE To compare the effects of transient blur constraints on the perception of natural scenes in myopic and emmetropic observers. When natural images are blurred, the global structure of the scene-its context-becomes essential for decision making. The authors also aimed to control whether the difference in performance between myopes and emmetropes, if any, resulted from the ability to use contextual information or the ability to process blurred features. METHODS Twenty-four subjects (13 emmetropes, 11 myopes) participated in the study. Subjects were instructed to fixate a target in a scene. Low-pass-filtered images were briefly displayed (100 ms) with normal or jumbled structures. The experiment was repeated three times to assess the ability of subjects to adapt to the imposed blur constraints. RESULTS Results showed that myopes performed better than emmetropes only when scene context was available. Myopes also adapted faster to the jumbling constraint. However, after three repetitions, both groups reached the same level of performance. CONCLUSIONS The present study demonstrated that myopes did not perform better than emmetropes in a transiently blurred environment, but they exhibited better and faster ability to adapt their perceptual strategies to the visual constraints by learning to make use of the relevant information available in the images displayed.

Corneal endothelial cell density decreases with age in emmetropic eyes.

PURPOSE To analyze the corneal endothelial cell density in healthy adult emmetropic subjects. METHODS We analyzed the corneal endothelial cell density of a group made up of 225 emmetropic subjects (n=225). As age-matched control groups we analyzed two other groups, one made up of myopic subjects (n=209) and the other made up of hyperopic subjects (n=203). We recorded the mean of three consecu...

Glaucoma-Induced Optic Disc Morphometric Changes and Glaucoma Diagnostic Ability of Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II in Highly Myopic Eyes

PURPOSE This study was performed to first investigate the morphological differences in the optic nerve head between highly myopic non-glaucomatous controls and highly myopic glaucomatous eyes in comparison with the differences between emmetropic non-glaucomatous controls and emmetropic glaucomatous eyes using confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. Further, the ability of the apparatus in glauc...

Axial length and choroidal thickness changes accompanying prolonged accommodation in myopes and emmetropes

The time course of elongation and recovery of axial length associated with a 30min accommodative task was studied using optical low coherence reflectometry in a population of young adult myopic (n=37) and emmetropic (n=22) subjects. Ten of the 59 subjects were excluded from analysis either due to inconsistent accommodative response, or incomplete anterior biometry data. Those subjects with vali...

Peripheral refraction and image blur in four meridians in emmetropes and myopes

Introduction The peripheral refractive error of the human eye has been hypothesized to be a major stimulus for the development of its central refractive error. Aim The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the peripheral refractive error across horizontal, vertical and two diagonal meridians in emmetropic and low, moderate and high myopic adults. Subjects and methods Thirt...

Peripheral optical errors and their change with accommodation differ between emmetropic and myopic eyes.

The progression of myopia is thought to be controlled by the retinal image quality, but its triggering factors are not yet well known. The differences between the peripheral optics in emmetropic and myopic eyes might explain why some eyes become myopic. The present study further investigates peripheral optical quality and how it is affected by accommodation. The refraction and aberrations of th...
